The debut of Philly Prep English teacher and accidental sleuth, Amanda Pepper, (and of C.K. Mackenzie, homicide detective) won the World Mystery Convention's "Anthony" for best first mystery.

When the body of a colleague is found dead in Amanda's living room, she has to clear herself of suspicion—and make sure she isn't the next victim as well. And all she's got as a clue to the real killer's identity is a locket shaped like Winnie-the-Pooh.

This is the third book I've read by Gillian Roberts but the first in the series -- I'm doing it backwards. This was still an excellent book, but not as polished as the two later books I've read. Still, Philadelphia "detective" heroine English teacher Amanda Pepper is just as likeable and funny from the start (although I think the books get funnier), and the romantic chemistry with Louisiana-born CK (in later books boyfriend and meets her as homicide detective in tihs book) is there from the start.

Amanda's involvement with murder mysteries begin when a rain-soaked part-time teacher at her school shows up first thing in the morning on the doorstep of her charming little colonial home. The ditzy visitor (she's an actress) is not making much sense, but Amanda has to get to work and leaves the jabbering woman (unwillingly) in her home where the soon-to-be victim says she's going to take a nap. In no time at all, as the reader discovers in the first few pages, she has been killed. The police at first suspect Amanda -- it was her home, she knew the victim, was the one who found her, and has apparently been telling some untruths to the witchy school secretary. Amanda is quickly drawn up into solving this murder, in part because it becomes clear quickly that her life may be in danger.

I am looking forward to reading the whole series. OK, maybe this is a series for literate women who like funny, gutsy women "detectives" with sexy boyfriends... but the writing is high quality and the plotting improves in future books in the series (in this one, I spotted the killer about half-way through the book, but then I read a LOT of mysteries and like to think I'm good at that.)

Caught Dead in Philadelphia An Amanda Pepper Mystery Book 1 edition by Gillian Roberts Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews

CK. Liked having the main character a smart literature teacher. Looking forward to reading subsequent books in the Pepper series.
I really like all the Amanda Pepper books. This one, the first, is a strong start to the series. Our heroine is a high school English teacher with an interesting set of flaws and insecurities. When a flamboyant and glamorous colleague is murdered in Amanda's apartment, naturally she's the primary suspect and takes on the case to clear herself. She's both assisted and thwarted at every turn by the attractive but maddening police detective assigned to the murder. It's the perfect setup for what could have been yet another Nancy Drew type tale, but Gillian Roberts has created a vivid set of secondary characters and a a twisty plot that's fun to follow.

While this mystery is rather long in the tooth--no computers, cell phones or GPS, and lots of plaid skirts, it holds up well. The dialogue sparkles, delivered by multidimensional characters, and the story goes to some cool places. It's good.
GREAT BOOK. Arrived in excellent shape. Good Characters. Good story.
Lots of fun and plots that are truly well plotted. The book keeps you guessing until the end and the solution makes sense based on the clues in the book. Amanda Pepper is an engaging heroine and C. K. Mackenzie is a smart, honest detective. Their relationship grows along with the cases. If you have not read any of these books you are in for a treat.
This is the first novel in the Amanda Pepper series. Most reviewers agree that it is not the best novel in the series, but it is an interesting plot, and it did keep me up late to finish the novel. The writing style is very good, and it is an easy reading novel. You can guess at the guilty party and the ending, but it is not obvious, even when the motive is revealed. As in real life, there are characters in the novel you will like, and characters you will hate.
This book is an interesting little mystery with dry humor and no foul language. An enjoyable read about a teacher, Amanda Pepper, discovering two murders and her stumbling trying to find the killer with a smart detective, C K McKenise. Will need to read other Amanda Pepper mysteries to discover the names associated with McKenise.
This is a fun series and one I quite adored when it came out years ago. It's great to have it in e now and the story stands up well-- not feeling uncomfortably dated. Amanda Pepper, teacher at a prep school for underachieving wealthy kids, stumbles upon a murder. The detective in charge of the investigation is competent and attractive, but of course, the more she is warned away the more curious she gets and Amanda can't let the matter go...
