This is an excellent book, one I very much enjoyed reading. One reviewer wondered if men would like this book. Well, I'm a man and I thought it was great. I happen to like chess, but you don't have to be into chess to enjoy this book. A great first novel!Product details

The Mating Game A New Romance Novel from the British Women Chess Champion James Essinger author Jovanka Houska author 9781911546108 Books Reviews
This humorous, warmhearted peek into the life of lovely Ivana Jones draws the reader into the chess world in a novel and highly engaging way. The story that unfolds as the protagonist makes her way through a series of extraordinary circumstances is intriguing to the point where it is difficult to put the novel down! Pervasive throughout the novel is the wonderful sense of genuine humanity in the face of some quite intense crises, that helps to make the book quite compulsively readable. No spoilers, but I did very much like the twist in the tail (tale?) )
I liked the book very much. As I myself is a chess player, although only amateur and not so strong as those acting in the book, I was thrilled to dive into the atmosphere of chess tournaments and chess world, which I like so much! All non-chess stuff in the book is simply great. The only (minor) flaw, IMHO, could be that the main heroine spends too little time between and especially before (and even sometimes during) the tournaments for chess preparation being occupied mostly with non-chess things of all kinds - and nevertheless achieves great results. I very doubt that nowadays it is possible so it seems a little bit unnatural. However, the book is very interesting and I surely recommend it to read. Enjoy! (You definitely will).
Jovanka Houska's novel of a young woman named Vanny competing in various chess tournaments affected me in many ways. What drew me into the story was Houska's obvious talent to show her characters to the reader. This is a difficult thing for any author to achieve, and as a writer myself, I can say I was impressed by her ability to realize her characters and may consider learning more about getting them to come forward as Houska has in her book. As I stated, I was affected by her story; in an emotional and sexual way. As this is the first romance novel I've ever read, I found myself getting turned on throughout the story, laughing at Houska's shrewd humor, reluctant to find out about characters in peril, and interested in her unique writing style, puns, and brilliant imagination. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it and I was surprised at how well written it was, especially with your extensive knowledge of the English language (having had to look up a few words at times through I am American and you are Norwegian, and I'm sure you admire Magnus but for his mind only) and not only was it obvious that the writing was good and the story was good, but it is obvious you put forth a real effort into it. Good job, Jovanka. I look forward to your next book!

It is porn, simply porn.
Surprisingly good and fast read. Needs more editing for sure but it's good enough. Very fast-paced and, if you're a fast reader, you'll probably finish this in one reading. Some characters are really from the top of the chess world.
